I apologize for asking a question about an Oldsmobile, but it has an Ecotec engine so I think I can find some decent insight from Saabers who have had problems with their Ecotec engines. I'm quite stumped and this problem is intermittent.
I have a friend with a 2003 Olds Alero with a 2.2L Ecotec, which appears very similar to my '97's 2L. Occasionally her car will not start when she tries, but always starts eventually and neither outside temperature nor engine temperature seem to affect it's ability to start. I looked at the car a few weeks ago, but I could not replicate the problem; the engine started without fail about 40 times, under as many conditions as I could replicate. I looked everything over, cleaned some of the extra dielectric grease out of the DI cassette, cleaned and regapped the spark plugs; but I found nothing that would suggest an issue. She did mention that her brother had replaced the fuel pump before this issue arose, but said she can always hear the fuel pump run; even when it doesn't start. She told me the fuel pump was replaced because the car stalled at a stop light. I suspect the fuel pump was fine all along and the car stalled for the same reason it doesn't want to start. Please, can anybody provide me with some insight? I'd really like to get this car working properly for her. Thanks in advance.
