I suppose it could be possible that even though the electrical system, fuel pump, ignition system are energized with the key in the ON position, when the switch is further rotated to the START position, contact could be lost and the electrical system no longer energized; the engine would crank, but nothing would have power to fire the ignition or fuel injection. THANKS NOEL!!! You've just provided the substantiation I needed!

The car does have a fuel pressure regulator, readily accessible; the vacuum hose is intact. I didn't check the fuel pressure, but I did depress the schrader valve with the system energized and not energized, and got a good spray both times. I didn't take the time to inspect the electrical system, and I have no idea what quality of work was done to the fuel pump, so I can't rule out the possibility a mistake in installation has compromised the integrity of it's circuit. However, the fact we can always hear the pump turn on negates justification to drop the fuel tank. I did look at everything I can see under the hood, and saw no chewed or otherwise exposed wires, nor any indication that things had been moved or neglected enough to suspect broken wires, and all connections were secure. Granted that doesn't mean there isn't something I can't see on a basic visual inspection, but I was working on limited information and couldn't justify spending more than a couple hours without knowing what I was looking for. If this was my car, I'd spend more time looking for the problem; and I would have access to it anytime I wanted to check something. But I have limited access, and also need to justify the $35 per hour that I charge. I can't just run the clock looking and looking without finding an answer.
