I spoke with a very reputable and experienced Porsche mechanic about tires and balancing recently, and he said that over the course of his career, he had the least problem with Michelin tires. They seen to have great quality control processes, and make consistently very round tires.
He talked about road force balancing as an option, where they mount the tire, put it on the machine, then un-mount and turn it for best match with the rim, and then balance it again on this special Hunter machine. He says that this system can help a lot, but with good tires it's often not necessary.
So I got a new set of Michelins for my Saab, and they are very smooth with the regular balancing. I don't feel any vibration at all now.
