Driver's side (left): down to loosen, up to tighten
Passenger's side (right): down to tighten, up to loosen.
I just did this today, coincidentally. Going down is much hard than going up. Also, once you have it tight enough that it is basically not possible for you to spin it with your hands, the next step is to loosen it a few clicks so that it spins rather easily, but the pads will STILL make some contact. That was the important part people left out.
