Always have ANY brand car checked out by a good indy mechanic or a local dealership. It should run about $100, but if you are serious about the car, this will let you know about anything that is wrong with it, and provide you with info to justify the price, or talk it down. If the seller does not want to let you do this, WALK AWAY! A good friend of mine did not heed this advice and ended up with a broken timing belt and trashed valves. I brought my 97 900SET to the dealer, they found a leaking head gasket and quoted $2000 for the job, I talked the seller down $1250 from the asking price, got the gasket replaced by my indy for $900. As you can see this more than made up for the $1O0 i spent on the inspection. Anyone who is honestly trying to sell their car and not trying to rip you off should be glad to let the mechanic take a look at it, and anyone who does not want to might be trying to screw you. In the past I have left my current car with the seller while I took their car to the mechanic. Also, one time the seller volunteered to take the car to the dealer himself, and I paid for the inspection. Sorry this is so long, but as a well known shade tree mechanic within my group of friends, I am always asked to come along and look at cars, and am constantly telling people to bring it to a mechanic. Good luck with your purchase.
