a problem, a problem they wish they had today. The Trollhatten production line was more or less full, if the convertible sales took off there was the need for an expensive new production line but no guarantee the demand for the new drop top would hold up, if it ever materialized at all. Hedging the bet, Saab contracted with Finnish firm Valmet, who are a very clever outfit involved in many unrelated but generally successful businesses. Valmet took the chance and built all the C900 'verts, the NG900 and the 9-3 until maybe 2006 (5-7?) when an Austrian company took over. Under your hood on the left side is a metal tag "Built in Finland" no mention of Valmet.

Valmet has a real auto plant, Saab shipped the running gear but they stamp the sheet metal and built the cars, when Porsche needed extra plant capacity for the Boxster line Valmet was the only plant in Europe who met their quality standards.
