01 Viggen 80k miles.
The engine has just developed a rather distressing "whirring" noise, which changes pitch exactly in conjunction with engine RPM. I am thinking might be the bearing on the idler for the balance chain. I've removed the serpentine belt and fired the engine for a minute to eliminate any of the accessories, noise was still present. I removed the valve cover just to get a visual inspection, of what little can be seen, all looked well.
I replaced all of the chains, guides etc. about a year ago, the one item that was not replaced was the idler for the balance chain. I did the swap with the engine in the car, and was not able to remove the bolt holding the idler in place, couldn't budge it. Wasn't all that comfortable with not replacing the idler, even less so now :)
Just wondering if anyone has any tricks to diagnose where the noise might be coming from? Aside from cutting the balance chain and eliminating the possibility that it is the idler :).
