The closest thing I have seen to what you describe is actual balance shaft bearings seizing. When that happens you can see burnt paint on the block where the bearings are. Maybe you could rent a boroscope and look at it while someone turns the engine over by hand.
Another thing I have seen that makes a similar sound is a clogged pick-up screen in the pan. Now that I think of it I had a bad oil filter make a sound like that once too.
