Thanks Ron.
I could use a link as to how to check the oil in tranny or change. Not sure on that. Will try to google or search here.
Regarding the clutch, I just checked again, and it's definitely an issue of the clutch not engaging. What's really baffling is that the clutch DID seem to engage fine just before I did the shifter align. So, maybe it's just coincidence or maybe not.
Also, the noise and burning I think was because I had the brake engaged, and full started the engine with it in first. Since the clutch wasn't engaging, I'm assuming this sorta ground the gears or clutch or something.
I think I have the guide you mention for aligning the shifter. I'll check again, but I just don't quite understand it.
1) There is the hole (which is supposed to have a plug and mine doesn't). When I shift to fourth, you can put really any sort of pin in that hole and it will then not allow you to shift out of 4
2) Then, I slacken the nut on the shaft close to the firewall just behind lingage
3) This is where I get confused. I can see the punched hole through the shaft, and someone had scrawled a line on it towards the shifter.
4) From here, my guess is I'm supposed to move the stick until it seems the hole on the shaft is in line with the shifter? Sorta makes sense, but not really, because there is enough play in there for the shift rod to move back and forth and side to side. How do I know where exactly?
5) It says in the guide to insert a 2nd pin when aligned, and then tighten. I don't what that means. There is another small hole, but that doesn't have any effect of "freezing" the stick. I've just been holding the stick as tightly as possible and having someone else tighten down the nut.
So maybe I'm doing this alignment all wrong. I know I'm usually able (through trial/error) to get the stick shifting smooth with the engine off through gears 1-4. however ALWAYS nearly impossible to get 5 or reverse working. This is what has made me thing something is wrong in linkage or tranny.
I wonder if the whole alignment/linkage issue is somehow tied into the clutch not fully engaging. Like if the linkage hits the gear just right it will shift. Not sure.
