As an update. Did the alignment properly this time, and got about the biggest diameter screwdriver (pin) I could find that would still fit in the "hold" hole by the stick. Tightened the bolt, and I could feel a difference. The tranny seems to even go into 5th with engine off, but still not reverse. However, I can feel a problem. It's sticky, and there is like a "wall" now in neutral where I have to push left a few times to get the stick to the left for 1st and 2nd.

Haven't started engine yet, because battery went dead from all the putzing around with the stupid reverse lock, key in, etc. Charging, but I have a sinking feeling it won't shift, or I may not be able to even start the engine with it in gear. I think this because that was the state it was last in.

I'm still confused though on the clutch failing to engage. Most every case I've read there is some lead up to a clutch completely failing like this. Also, the whole thing where it was sort of working, and then completely failed to the point where if I started the car with it in gear, the clutch (or something else) would grind.

As I understand it , the clutch operates independently. So, even if the gearbox were messed up, not aligned, etc., if the clutch is engaged, the engine should run fine at idle. Is that correct, or is there something else I could be missing?

#UPDATE

Started up. Can't shift into any gears. Like the "wall" feeling. Engine seems to strain a bit as I push the stick towards any gear. I pushed harder to try to drop it into 3rd and got a definite loud gear grind noise. Shut it off, and shifted into reverse with the engine off.

Any possibility the clutch is still alive , and this is a tranny problem? Maybe all the fluid is gone due to that hole plug missing?
