You seem to be in every thread on this board and are always an invaluable resource!
So just so I know what you are saying that the crankshaft position sensor can be failing when cold as well.
I do notice a jump on the tach when starting. Which scan tool are you referring to? It would be hard for a mechanic to scan because they would have to keep it overnight AND it would have to be cold.

Would other symptoms be turning over several times before starting? I have had that happen a couple of times.

Unfortunately I have had the car checked by a mechanic who stated that it was "weeping" in one place. I began to weep when he told me it would be 1500 dollars at a minimum to do the heads. I had a second evaluation on the price who said 800 so no worries just yet.
I have had mornings where I have had to top off the coolant tank about a cup or so.
