If you have the need, the need for speed, then Viggen all the way. A 3" turbo back, a bigger intercooler and a tune are all you really need to throw at it to thoroughly freak out your passengers. Torque steer, harsh ride, low bumper, yada yada, can't say I've ever found any of that to be an issue. Manly men like their SAABs vicious!
Check engine light, have had one for eons, evap leak, don't care any more. Mine has 119k now, thrashed since 30k, although I am good about oil changes and of course listening to the car and fixing items when needed. Half a dozen MAFs, hooter valves... Don't pay attention and bye bye motor. Drive shafts, transmission rebuild, lots of brakes and tires, otherwise no engine issues to speak of. Which is STILL annoying because I want to get this thing up to the 450HP range and I can't justify the rebuild on a perfectly functional motor!!
So, on the more sedate side of things:
I had a 2000 base 9-3 (T7, manual) that I bought brand new before the Viggen and for sure it was a consistent performer, very confortable ride, more ground clearance, etc. Much more suitable for a family car.
BTW, If you're looking to jump ship, an older 1.8T Audi A4 would be my suggestion. Great car with FWD/AWD, manual/auto, sedan/wagon variants, and mod friendly to boot.
