Considering a -02 9-3 or an NG900 to replace my C900! Posted by Ilovemountains [Email] (#1318) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ilovemountains) on Wed, 31 Dec 2014 18:24:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I’m thinking about trying to find a clean, preferably 1 owner -02 9-3 or an NG900... I really have no experience with them at all, though I’ve been a SAAB C900 enthusiast for over 20 years, well I actually owned a 1994 900s 2 door 5 speed years ago, I bought it to save it from the scrap yard, drove it for a summer and sold it, it had some rust and needed paint but seemed to be a pretty solid car.
I’m leaning toward finding an 01 or 02 with the lowest possible miles but considering from 1994 to August of 2002 they are basically the same car I don’t want to rule out an earlier example if its clean, unless they are plagued with issues!
Main questions or thoughts at this time are:
1: Are the 4 speed automatic transmissions reliable or should I just focus on finding a 5 speed? “I prefer a 5 speed but have found a few immaculate low mile cars that are automatics” Im hoping the NG transmissions in both flavors are more reliable than the C900 units!
2: Any years or models to avoid that had more issues than others? “mainly concerned about things like head gasket failures, the AC system, wiring, transmission etc”
3: Any strange places to check for rust like on the C900 at the lower control arm mounts?
I’ve read that engine sludge is an issue on cars that didn’t have the oil changed regularly and that the ignition cassettes fail about every 60k both not a big deal… What are the tell tail signs of the sub frame issues that I once heard about, years ago?
Any input would be greatly appreciated! Happy New Year! Matt
