Torqueing wheel bolts with the vehicle raised makes sense from an ergonomics perspective. No need for the techs to be bending over or kneeling on the ground time and time again all day long.
I would like to know how you substantiate "this will also center the wheel on the hub better."
I think we need to differentiate between tightening of the bolts and torquing of the bolts, as I follow a procedure of incrementally tightening the bolts in a crisis cross pattern, working up to the final torque value in a two step process. I will tighten the bolts on the first pass prior to lowering the car back down, at which point the second pass torques the bolts to spec. I am working with a jack not a lift, of course. If I had a lift, I'd do it all in the air. I am arguing that for the final torque to spec, it does not matter, up in the air or touching the ground, either provides equivalent results.
