In my limited experience, they will have an arrow printed on them indicating flow direction.
But, as Anders indicated, they might be designed to have a special flow rate or delay. He's the one with the vast training and experience.
And I see he's also talking about vacuum delay valves, which are not check valves. They just slow down air flow through a line, but don't block it in either direction.
