,,, the way I figure it, next weekend I'll turn over 200k miles. Who could ask for more??? It's never left me anywhere, never failed to perform, never burned a drop of oil, and has been the most trouble free, fastest, and funnest car I've ever owned. (well.... the '71 96 with V-4 and FREEWHEEL (!) was actually the most fun... But then again, I was a lot younger...then again.... I'd freaking KILL for "free wheel" in this latest ride... that's another story...) All in all, I love this 94 SET--- the 2 ltr is the best. And so is 10w30 dino (and $1.99 Purolators :)).
Based on..... a one time experience, and 200k miles....Maintenance items.... count on hi-bucks AC problems. Earmark $1500 over the long haul-- lots of leaks here. The evap core is the worst, most common, and most expensive culprit. Deal with it.
Count on some suspension problems--- upper mounts--- about a $5 to $6hundred deal if you hit potholes and need the dealer to replace. Much less if you do it yourself. (Can be a daunting yet totally do-able DIY task.) Other suspension probs are merely mileage and/or driver habit related stuff. Alignment, tie rod ends, ball joints, etc.
Bearing in mind that I run a lot of hiway miles, you still might need to replace the clutch cable (never have, and at this mileage, it's a grudge match--- me against the "string" at this point, might never ever...) and also perhaps some rear seals, or maybe some transmission seals. This can run into some money, as it costs a lot to pull a trans. I'd suggest living with the leaks unless it totally greases your driveway, and/or is so bad that you run the risk of burning a trans because of lack of oil. It's your call, but I'd make sure to have your trans case checked for oil on a regular basis.
Hmmm... what else... Oh-- the direct ignition cassette- (the big red aluminum component across the top of your 4 cylinder)--- it's good for about 80k-- then you start to miss intermittently. Change to new NGK plugs first as a cheap fix, then when that inevitably doesn't work, buy one from Impex or Sobstory for about $275.
Other than that, I can't think of too much else that's gone wrong with this vehicle.
Just don't forget to honor the dinosaurs by pouring their decomposed hides into your crank-case every so often. (And ignore all those guys that think that cold, sterile, polymer based chemicals masquerading as Hot Mazola have a soul. )
Oh... and cheap oil filters apparently work. Sorry, couldn't resist... and you need to base your oil changes on engine hours rather than miles driven. Figure it out fer yerself. Having an engine idle for 1 hour in rush hour traffic for 10 miles is equal to driving 75 miles for an hour on a hiway in my book.
That's my secret to happinjess and a long life.
