Honestly, all that can be said is that these things happen. A buddy of mine had a BMW in which his timing belt broke. Like you said, valves, rods...it cost him $1500 AND he worked at a foriegn car garage (labor free). It sounds suspect that it would go around 100k, but it all depends upon the use/abuse the car might have had before you owned it. Most garages/dealerships strongly recommend a new timing belt every 60k. It is quite likely you have (had) the original belt. Any car I have ever owned over 60k, unless it had a near-complete history, the timing belt was the first thing done. It's well worth the expense and much, much cheaper than the alternative. Also note that your Saab isn't much more of a money sucking vehicle than most cars out on the road when it comes to these situations. A timing belt is a timing belt in most circumstances. I hope all works out.
