I don't know that anyone is really 'touchy' about the air intake question. I know that Dean, myself, and a few others have tried a few different options. What is probably missing the most are good objective numbers. I, for one, do not have the time to measure air intake temperatures and pressure losses through the intake system. Those are really the kind of numbers that could show if one option is really better than another. Short of having numbers, it is really a matter of intuition and the amount of time one is willing to spend.
One area Dean has been very clear about (and I thank him for this) is the need for cool air (cone filters in the engine compartment just won't do) and the need to choose materials that will not shatter or collapse and enter the intake. There is no sense in lowering the engine performance, or worse, damaging the engine. So gentle reminders about what NOT to do hopefully help keep inexperienced owners from getting into trouble.
BTW, some good information on the use of a manometer to find the air intake restrictions can be found at this link.
