Buy the new 9-3 or check out the Infiniti G35 or BMW 3 series. The latter 2 are definitely much better than the Audi and hopefully the new 9-3 will be too. With the stability control systems, you probably don't need poorer fuel mileage and weight penalty of AWD for most situations. And if you really need AWD, there is always the 325xi.
The attitude of the BMW and Infiniti dealers - at least in Halifax - are much better than what you describe. Interesting since they are the only outlets east of Montreal and have a rather captive market. They actually seem interested in selling cars.
