Unfortunately, it sounds like easy out-of-state $$$ for Massachusetts, and he probably nailed you for your out of state tags. Does MA have a reciprocal agreement with CT as far as driving records are concerned? (I'm not sure if it's federal law yet that any moving violation guilty verdict has to be recorded in your home state.) If not, you might just want to pay it. Otherwise, I would stand trial. Your defense might be that you thought it prudent (for safety's sake) to pass the clog of traffic that had built up behind a slower moving vehicle (the policeman)in the right lane. Your motivation being to open up the left lane so that you wouldn't be in close quarters with other bottlenecked traffic.
Sheesh, seriously, driving behind a cop doing the limit, with traffic bottlenecking up behind is actually more dangerous than going a little faster in order to open up the road. You also might want to mention how doing 75 in a 65 mph zone has in effect become a "prima facie" limit, and is par for the course, even for troopers, as long as driving conditions are ok. Here's another reason I'd stand trial-- the policeman might not be likely to show up for a 10 mph over the limit offense, knowing he's likely to lose, in which case, you can plead not guilty, and argue everything, including the time that the ticket was written, all to your advantage.
