Narrower applies more pressure turning the snow to... water. The same thing that happens when you ice skate. Putting, in my case, 200+ lbs onto 1/16" blades creates quite a lot of pressure in a small area. Turning the ice to water and creating a small, fluid area with less friction. It's physical chemisrty, baby. PV=nRT As pressure increases the volume, in this case snow, must decrease to maintain the same temp. But volume becomes a finite number (incompresability of fluids) and temp must increase with continued increase of pressure. Hence, ralling with narrower tires in the snow would provide better traction, because you are effectively turning the snow to water.
Now, my example may not be 100% accurate. I think you get the point though. It has been a long time since I had to concern myself with questions that appeared on P. Chem tests when I was in college.
If the logic fails somewhere, please someone let me know.
Cheers,
Gregg
