thinking of buying a 98 900SET

I have to replace my BELOVED 87 Golf GT (210K) because it just won't pass California smog, no matter what I do.
My requirements for a car are that it be quick and fun to drive, 4 doors, a HATCH, good gas mileage, and that it be RELIABLE.
I would really like to buy a 2000 VW Golf 1.8T, but after doing tons of research have found that I just can't trust the quality of that car.
My need for a 4-door hatch has brought me to Saab. I am thinking of buying a used 98 900SET with 50K. My questions to you owners: do you have long-term driving satisfaction? What are the major differences b/w the 900 and the newer 9-3 models? Any other advice would be appreciated!!
