Based on your excellent description (thank you!), I do not see an easy solution. When paint is this far gone, about the best you can do it keep it on life support until you can repaint it.
Dead paint really cannot be brought back to life unless there is a substantial amount of paint thickness, which I don't think your car has. With enough paint you could polish it down until you uncovered healthier paint that will hold a shine. But since you're down to primer on some spots, there simply isn't a lot to work with.
A couple of ideas, if I may:
1. Use a cleaner wax that will provide some amount of shine and a little bit of protection. This will be the easiest method since you're just using one product but the results won't last long, so it'll need more frequent applications to maintain a decent shine.
2. Use a pre-wax cleaner followed by a pure wax. Meguiars and Mothers sell pre-wax cleaners that have little abrasives yet do a good job of restoring faded paint. Follow this up with your favorite wax and your paint should look as good as reasonably possible. This option is a lot more work but the results should be better.
3. Do a three-step program using a paint polish, glaze and wax. This will probably give you the best shine but requires the most work. You're looking at three products and a lot of elbow grease. The glaze step will add oils back into the paint and give it a nice look. However, even this option may not last a long time (a month or two, maybe...)
There is really nothing you can do to stop the dead paint transfer. Even the options I described will only delay the inevitable. If you have some wax on hand, apply it to a small section of your car and see how long it holds up. At least you'll know if it's worth it to spend the time and $$ doing one of processes I mentioned above.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Don't be afraid to try a few experiments if you're curious; the paint can't really be damaged at this stage. I hope this helps.
