The technical name for the kind of leather in cars is pigmented leather. Its basically a spray-on dye that's topped with a protective coating. Auto leather is made this way to meet the QC and durability requirements of the automakers.
The problems start when car owners use products made for non-pigmented leather thinking they are "feeding and conditioning" the hides. All this does is create a nice look and a bit of a mess on top of the sealed leather. This is true for a great deal of leather covered furniture too.
In some ways auto leather is like auto paint. A similar mindset to leather care should provide good results.
