True enough, but you have the power! You can do many things to prevent this. Here are a number of them in no particular order.
1. Use a Macintosh computer and the MacOS. Most of the spyware, spamware, take control-ware, adware, viruses, etc are Windows OS specific. Don't want to be affected by them, don't run Windows. That's not a possibility for many folks because of corporate mandates etc, but it is one to consider when possible. TSN was first created on a Mac and I still use a Mac Powerbook to produce the site today and as my main work machine.
2. Don't use Outlook Express. I think it boils down to the fact that a lot of hackers are mad at Microsoft so they specifically target this particular email application. Many of these doo-dads that wreak havoc on your system target Outlook Express. I use Eudora and it's great. Eudora combined with the Spambouncer.org's filters I use (or perhaps SpamAssassin) means I now rarely get any spam at all in my inbox. I went from 30-50 a day down to less than 7 a week.
3. Configure your email application! Don't auto-open anything. I have my own application set such that I don't open any HTML at all. This is a common way that spammers verify your email address. They embed a graphic link like this:
http://www.somespamsite.com/track/email.gif?user@domain.com
If you have load HTML on, your email application will load that graphic and the spammer's web logs will include your email address and bingo, they know you are a valid recipient and you'll get even more spam.
3. Use SpamCop.net! Spamcop.net has a nifty Real-Time Blocking List which TSN uses. Report your spam! Once enough spam is reported from a source, it goes on the blocking list and the spammer will find that many mail servers will no longer accept mail from them at all. Is anyone interested in a free SpamCop.net account? I'm willing to do a raffle for a dozen accounts if people will use them!! TSN is a financial supporter of SpamCop.net. I've paid for an account for myself and I've made the suggested $50 donation to use the Blocking List. I've even asked SpamCop.net if I could pay for a universal TSN accoun that we all could use together with the "fuel" for the account being paid by TSN, but I have not yet heard back.
Hope this helps,
-Scott
