Very OT: Photographing Buisnesses.... Illegal?

Hey guys,
I have a quick (and probably dumb) question...
I was taking some pictures in Savannah today for my photography class here at college. I won't get too in depth with the assignment, but it was just to take pictures of ordinary things, and then abstract them with the vantage point/viewfinder/aperature/etc.
I found a nice shot on the exterior of a streetside CVS pharmacy. I was taking a picture of where a window with its blinds down, met an overhang off the roof. Out of the corner of my eye, I see someone standing there. After the picture is shot, I realize it's a CVS worker who is coming into work...
"Excuse me! Why are you taking pictures of our building?!"
"It's for an art project."
"Well, you know you must ask management if you can take pictures of our building, because it's a buisness!"
"Ok, thanks. Sorry. I will."
"No, no! Get back here. Don't just OK me. Next time I will do something about it!"
If there is a law about this I'm sure I've broken it about 1,000 times. I was just curious if anyone knew this is valid or if she was just on a powertrip.
FWIW, after I was done with the roll, I went into CVS, waved to her behind the pharmacy counter and smiled, and dropped off the film to be developed at their one hour photo ( :
Thanks guys,
Like to hear your input,
Taylor
