Actually, the pdf contained in the site pointed out by KenB is an accurate and useful field guide. I suggest you put it to good use!
As my handle suggests, I do have a legal background. In fact, I work mostly on commercial law and intellectual property matters, so this is basically right in my wheelhouse.
To synopsize other valid points made in this thread, the only caveat to the laissez faire rule noted in the pdf is that you cannot use a camera to "copy" another's intellectual property or exploit the personal or proprietary likeness of another without permission. The legal lines tend toward grey and fuzzy when you have famous people in semi-private settings, or when a company's signature dominates a particular scene, for example.
In reality, this just means that people can sometimes prevent you from (or, as is more often the case, sue you for) using certain pictures, even if they can't stop you from taking them.
