the width of the tire really doesn't affect your speed - If you're really serious you'll want the tire to have a very small moment of inertia about the wheel's axis of rotation - thus heavy things neat the axle (hub/bearings/gears) arn't a big deal, but the same amount of extra weight near the edge of the wheel is detrimental (heavy tire, thick rim...)
Realistically though it isn't something you're going to notice with different tires. For better road feel try to pump the tires up to a higher pressure. Your pedaling will then be more efficient. On my commuter bike I have the tires at ~110psi.
If you need parts, I suggest you try Rivendell bicycles, a vintage bicycle components company in Cali. They sell very beautiful things.
oh, btw maximum tire width is primarily limited by the width of the brake calipers. If yours is an early 80's bike you could probably run widths up to 27.
