Parts count (as it affects cost) and weight versus power and thermal efficiency (KWH per unit of fuel). Most good pushrod V-block engines come out way ahead of DOHC V-blocks on account of so damn many cams and valves, and long cam chains or belts with complicated runs. In some DOHC V_block designs, they make a compound cam drive - one cam per head driven directly, with the other one driven by the first one - adding even more complexity and cost. Inline engines, though, seem to do better with DOHC or SOHC 3 or 4 valve heads. Volumetric efficiency (hp/liter of displacement) tends to be much better with DOHC, but IMO that's only an issue when the taxman comes into play, as had been the case in Europe. Weight and size are more of a technical issue than displacement, and for a give power level a pushrod V-block tends to be lighter and smaller. Again, for in-line engines, the size and weight difference isn't so great, but the power output is.
