Pushrod engines provide better low RPM torque. My Ford F-150 has an inline-6 pushrod engine that is bulletproof reliable, will go 300K miles easily (if the truck frame doesn't rot out first), but has little additional power above 2500 RPM.
A double overhead cam design is much more complicated, with numerous belts/chains/sprockets, and they tend to need higher RPMs to achieve high horsepower and torque levels. They rev a lot easier than pushrod engines, are smoother in operation, and make less noise.
It seems the perfect marriage is a DOHC engine with a low pressure turbo that adds torque in the low rpm range. And it just so happens that my Saab (and my wife's Volvo, for that matter) do exactly that.
