In light duty trucks, GM and Chrysler V8's (including the new "Hemi") are pushrod designs, while newer Ford V8's (and the V10) are single overhead cam. My 2003 F150 has the 4.6 liter SOHC "Triton" engine, and the Chevy Silverado 1500 it replaced had a 5.3 liter pushrod "Vortec" engine. Our 1995 Ford van has a pushrod 5.0 liter V8, and I don't see much difference between it and the SOHC 4.6, which replaced it. The 4.6 has more horsepower, but they're essentially equal in torque (and performance). The "old fashioned" GM pushrod engines (including the one in my Chevy truck and in the 1992 Corvette we used to own) work very well. From what I hear, one of the most reliable engines GM has ever made is the 3.8 liter (3800) V6 they put in larger Buicks and Pontiacs, and it's a pushrod design. There's a lot to be said for an engine that won't self-destruct if the timing belt/chain slips or breaks. That being said, I have two of the latter, a Mercedes Benz 280 SL and our new Saab 9-5 Linear.
