Personally, I think it doesn/t really matter. I have seen good and bad implementations of both designs. In general, with a V engine pushrods kinga make sense. With an I engine they make much less sense.
Many people track the power per unit displacement as a very important metric.
I prefer to track power per unit mass. (mass of the engine)
The pushrod Corvette engine does _very_ well when engine output per unit engine mass is considered.
