I really empathize with all the feelings and thoughts of the "real" Saab people as that discription fits me too. I was not with Saab at the time of the 9-5 launch and I wonder if the mood was the same?
I can attest to the current success fueled by the 9-3SS. The big concern for me before the launch of the 9-3SS was not the content and design of the car, that would always be controversial, but how the car would be excuted, would it feel like a Saab? Say what you will about the design of a 9-3 or 9-5, but both cars have a level of paint, interior materials, fit and finish that equals or exceeds any car on the market and most importantly, is very un GM like. I'm satisfied with the 9-3SS in that regard. The car is very much a quality Trollhattan product, no mater where the components originate. GM has not robbed Saab of any of that quality of a Saab.
As for the design fulfulling the expectations of the "real" Saab people, I personally have mixed emotions. My customers on the otherhand are pretty much very favorably impressed. Much as I like the old world flavor of the 9-5 interior, when I poll my customers, they like the new 9-3SS better. I've found a new comparison clientel who have now put the 9-3SS on their list. And a test drive in a 9-3SS lives up to the reality of all the weight distrubition efforts, aluminium engine, hood, suspension and brake parts, and the benefits of Re-Ax, by offering a sporty feel that can be felt and quantified by the average potential owner. Back to back drives in a 9-3SE and a 9-3SS highlight the improvements. Even tried and true hatchback lovers regroup after back to back drives because of the unique, sporty feel of the 9-3SS.
And now the problem, Saab sales in the US are at an all time high because of the 9-3SS. I may not be totally happy with the look, but it's undeniably appealing, the keys on the floor, the turbos under the hood and away we go.
