a 32" Sony WEGA with widescreen (16:9) with bells and whistles for under $1K. However, you maybe able to get a standard 32" (4:3) Sony set close to a $1K+ range. Do a calculation on the screen size, a widescreen isn't that much more "bigger" than a 4:3 set, so if you watch more regular TV than watching DVDs, then a 4:3 set would do. However, it is clear that the industry is going the 16:9, even broadcast TV so understand your own need.
Just check out Sony's website, also retailers (even discount retailers) don't give price breaks on new model Sony TVs.
Have you looked at Samsung ? They have a couple of widescreen (16:9) HDTV for about $1K (31" or so).
