The TV recommended by JC seems to be nice (although they don't list the number of inputs -- I'd recommend two component, one for HDTV and one for DVD, and at least two S-video), and it'll do 720p. It's going to be hard to find an actual HDTV (i.e., with a 16x9 picture tube) for much less than $2,000.
If you have a receiver/preamp, you'll only need one s-video and one component input on the TV. I like being able to watch regular TV without -- in my system -- firing up a preamp and seven channels of amplification. I have two satellite receivers, a DVD player, HDTV, and VCR. With my TV, I can input all of these and listen to them (other then DVD -- who wants to watch a movie using TV speakers?) using the TV.
