There really isn't an answer here. It is true that rear projection sets have a narrow sweet spot. But then, if you're listening to 5.1 sound, the sweet spot of the sound is just as narrow, further necessitating choice seating :-)
For a TV that would be on as 'background' you don't want a rear projection anything, plasma anything, and so on. It's pointless, and obtrusive. Watch Dan Rather (or the Fox News dude, or your favorite political figure) from far away on a 55" set and it looks like Orwell and the view screens once again. Large sets are used for things like movies and sporting events, not your everyday watching.
COSTCO has a pair of Samsung HDTV widescreen glass tubes that are fairly decent. I could see that as a 'background' TV as well as the 'good' TV. We ended up with a Mitsu 55" rear proj built in to a media wall, but we only watch movies and sports there. Smaller projection TV's are not worth the trouble.
