The RIAA complains that their sales have dropped 30% due to online downloading. This I disagree with (more later). They believe that by going after the worst offenders and flexing some muscle perhaps they can stop some of it (if you know about FTP protocol you know they can't).
As for the 30% drop in sales, could this not be related to the fact that 30% OF THEIR PRODUCT SUCKS MAJOR ASS. I mean, why, oh why, would a kid who wants to hear the newest Britney hit single go pay $15.99 for the CD when they are only interested in one song, and rightly so since in fact the entire album sucks. The recording industry, like many, has gotten so used to astronomical profits that they've forgotten what got them in the position to make ANY profit - nurturing real talent with insisting on mega-sales right from the get-go. Most of the pap that you see on MTV or hear on whatever ClearChannel pop station you happen to receive in your area is from a one hit wonder who will be forgotten in less than 6 months.
If you want some insight rent or buy the rockumentary on the band Wilco called I Am Trying to Break Your Heart. It's about a band making an album, some really bad stuff happening to the band (like being dropped by their label, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers, because the band wouldn't make artistical compromises to appease the suits), and finally the ultimate vindication of being resigned by a different WB subsidiary and being able to proudly proclaim at the end of the movie "we were paid twice to make this album!" And, to realize the stupidity of the suits, Wilco's star has never been brighter. Will they sell as many albums as Britney? Hell no, but they'll still be making music when she's settled into a middling soft-porn career just to maintain her rock 'n roll lifestyle.
I'm glad the record companies are suing - the law is being flagrantly broken by anyone who downloads a song they don't own on a CD or serves it up for others who don't own the CD. That said they dug their own grave by not maintaining artistic integrity in the stuff they push as "mainstream".
Your mileage may vary,
John
