the Newshour on PBS did a story on this issue Tuesday evening where a musician (member of They Might Be Giants) and a songwriter. The songwriter raised points I had not considered such as the fact that he makes no money touring, he makes no money selling t-shirt and hats. He makes money by plopping his ass down in a chair and making up songs to make his way in the world.
I was already convinced that downloading copyrighted material for free HAD to be illegal. What made it difficult for the record companies to respond is that it went from a single server serving many users to a peer-to-peer network where everyone is downloading from everyone else. A popular song is dispersed widely and freely on the internet.
Shutting it down is impossible. The recording industry must, and will eventually, reorganize it's business model to fit the available technology rather than fighting 12 year-olds for $2K settlements.
