As a musician, when I put out a product after creating it and recording it, I expect to be paid. I put time, energy and recources into my product.
Scott runs the website. He puts time, energy and resources into the site.
He expects to be paid. Anyone who doesn't agree with this line of thinking just say "No thanks" when the boss hands you this week's paycheck. I believe everyone should be paid for their craft. Obviously, I have a soft spot for musicians because I know our struggles first hand. Keep in mind, the people you see plastered all over Sam Goody and the Virgin outlet stores are only a fraction of a percent of the business. The average working musician is WAY underpaid when you consider the time they invest to learn their craft.
ON THE OTHER HAND, those rat-bastard, mafiosos that run and work for the record labels can, as a good friend says, have a coke and a smile! They have been over-pricing and price fixing their product for so long it's incredible! Consider the fact that raw material is a fraction of what it used to be (remember LP's??) yet consumer cost is at or above what used to be. Production cost has been slashed by hundreds of percent, yet consumer cost remains high as it ever was. Did you know per unit cost of a CD, package and all, at reasonable quantity, is less than two dollars??
Add in the cost of advertising and distribution and everyone can make a comfortable living with a retail cost of less than ten dollars. Yet these imbeciles put a $17.99 retail sticker on it and make you think you're getting a great deal by putting a "sale" price of $14.99. Give me a
F%#@*ING BREAK!! They made their bed for years and years on an economic sector with high disposable income, but now they have to sleep in it and you know what? It smells like s^#$#. The computer age has made everyone too smart and too savy to bow to the Mega Corps of the Recording Kingdom. If they are to survive they will have to realize an honest profit. Schmucks and the lawyers who support them - todays recording industry.
And how about signing some talent that can actually play an instrument??
Don't get me started on that road, it's way too long for this thread.
