Back in the late 70's, my college buddies put in a dollar eash to buy the latest Zappa or LedZep or Black Sabbath album, then we'd all take turns with the Nakamichi cassette deck and make copies for ourselves. Record sales were very high, and, IMHO, it was because these artists really put out a product that people looked forward to owning and hearing. It was really part of the culture. The only other distraction was TV (which was lousy), so it became "what you did". And no one was coming after us for making a cassette copy... this got the music out and we all went to the concerts.

The difference now is the technology. In the time it took to copy an album to cassette, one can download many, many albums, and not have to visit the record store to get the master. This has made it so easy to get music, and people generally take the easiest path, sometimes regardless of whether it is 'right'. The attitude is "hey, everyone's doing it!".

Now my 12 year old daughter buys a "Blink138" or whatever CD, and she listens to it a few times until she decides it is just a bunch of noise. She is out her well earned $17.99 + tax.

But I am still listening to some of those cassettes that I made back in the 70s, and, in fact, so is my daughter ;-)

I'd venture that just as many Doors CDs are sold to teenagers as "BlinkNNN"...
