Pluses: There are a number of BMW owners that know how to drive well. Others, like my friend, drive an old car with 300k because it's an affordable, great piece of engineering. I work on his car with him and he works on my car with me. He can easily out-race me. The Germans and Swedes have shown each other a great number of things over the years. I hope that can continue. I envy their loyalty to RWD when they don't even make Volvos like that anymore. I appreciate the high-quality car they make. It looks pretty good and has an impressive number of other positive attributes. Those cars, and a good majority of people who drive them, are good.
Then there's the minus side, entitled "What Americans Do With It."
I've also encountered BMW owners that are annoying, arrogant, ignorant, et cetera. Keep in mind they probably bought a 900 turbo in the mid '80s. I say let these people continue to drive other makes because I want nothing to do with them.
My car is not a status symbol.
My car is not a performance sedan.
My car is not (and I am beginning to hate this word) "upscale."
My car is not measured by its 0-60 times, nor have I driven my car that way (12 secs? Not designed for it!)
My car is not the best one out there.
But it's the best for me.
I measure my car by different things. When the kid in the three year old white BMW automatic can pass me, out-accelerate, out-corner and out-brake me, that's great as long as you know how to use that capability. I'm happy blending in with traffic, wearing my seat belt, and watching my odometer digits roll over and years add on to my life. That's how I want to use my car. That's how I do use my car.
To the person on that board with the dancing genitalia icon, I'm single.
