Saab people really don't get into the navigation thing, I think it's a cultural concept...I had a friend of mine (big Saab person) say about navigation "Saab owners are smart enough to know where they're going."

I'm convinced that you will see navigation in every (luxury) car within 5 years.

a.) Navigation is cool. I know that sounds fairly lame, but it is cool. Being able to press a button to see where your car is in reference to all sorts of roads is really cool. A distraction? Perhaps. Saab people are supposedly not turned on by the gee-whiz factor, but a lot of other people are.

b.) Navigation is accurate. Your Rand Mcnally can't get to street level (and then some)accuracy. The purpose of navigation isn't cross country trips as much as local ones and trips through unfamiliar cities.

c.) Navigation offers interesting on demand features. For instance, you can take a phone number that just called you, enter it in, navigation can do a reverse lookup and then give you the address, plus directing you to the location.

minuses

a.) Navigation takes a lot of room on the dashboard. Car makers are still working on that.
b.) Many implementations of navigation simply suck interface wise. (The Japanese are better at this however.) The BMW implemention is particularly egregious (interestingly, few 3 series cars have it.)
c.) As part of a.) and b.) navigation often takes some of the other controls (like for HVAC and radio) and puts them together...quite annoying actually, especially if you have to go through multiple menus to do the simplest thing. (See BMW)
d.) It's expensive...though coming down in price, especially for some automakers. The Acura implementation is pretty good, and cheap. In no more than 3 years every Acura (and a good percentage of Accords) is gonna have it.
