Most cars come with Nav for an additional $1500-2000.

Most people do their driving near where they live -- probably 90% of their driving is within 40-50 miles of home. For that, they can buy a great local map (ADC makes terrific maps of the DC area, for instance, and the surrounding counties) for something like $20. So lets say you buy a map of your city area, plus a couple more for frequently-visited adjoining counties. That's like $80, tops.

Then, for 5% of the remaining 10% of the driving, people go to places with which they are generally familiar, but not intimately familiar. Say, driving to visit relatioves 4-5 hours away. For that they need a national or or state map. $20 each, total of $40.

The remaining 5% is in totally unfamiliar places, one-time visits. But no one ever ventures into those kinds of areas without good directions. So buy another $20 detailed map for that area -- OR better yet put your dialup/DSL/cable modem to work and pull up MapQuest FOR FREE!

In sum:

3-4 local maps: $80
1 National map: $20
1 state map: $20
MapQuest for everything else.

That's $120 to be well-equipped from a map standpoint for 5-10 years.

Now, why do i need to spend $1500-2000 for a trouble prone DVD nav system that occasioanlly spits out false info?

Nav systems are profit boosters for the car companies. Pure unadulterated profit.
