If I'm shooting action with my CP5700, I depend on a monopod for getting reasonable sharpness in fading light, as in the attached photo. If you notice the photographers at football games, you'll realize that it would be impractical to tote a tripod up and down the sidelines.
On the whole, I've been very satisfied with the Nikon. It has superb ergonomics (feels like part of my hand) and offers tremendous versatility from macro to 8x zoom. Color rendition is very natural. The magnesium body (this is a light-weight unit) and sturdy build quality have proven useful when travelling.
I don't think it's the best device for the casual user. The menu system takes some time to learn. Getting to the point where you can change setting w/o looking away from the viewfinder (I don't use the LCD) takes lots of practice.
The biggest drawback for me is the lack of wide angle capability, which is what you need to get those close-in sexy car pics.
Also, you'll need to buy an extra battery or two, and a larger compact flash memory card.
If you want a great point & shoot camera to take with you in your carry-on, check out the Canon S400, a very nice item. It's always in my flight bag.
Best,
Greg
