Sure it's lacking the manual features of the cameras mentioned so far but, for me, it came down to the question of Why was I buying a camera??? So I would take pictures while travelling and occasionally other events. Experience with a variety of SLR's has taught me that aside from not being a great photographer (lucky to even be called a hobbyist), that I didn't take many photos due to the size, time and general inconvienence of a larger camera.
The S400 solved that and has pretty good features/optics to boot. I'm very happy with it. I still use the SLR periodically but the Canon is frequently in my pocket, in my backpack, in the glove compartment, etc.
Oh yeah, not that I'm recommending it but the little Canon has taken quite the beating and shows scratches and dents on all four sides yet functions as well as the day it was bought. It's a solid little unit...but one should still watch those sweaty hands flinging the camera around a little too fast. :)

PS: One minor issue that I've not seen mentioned in the reviews of the S400, if I recall correctly, is that the photos do sometimes seem a little washed out, particularly in sunlight. A few that I've wanted to print, I've touched up by altering the color balance. I wish the software I used (as included by Canon) had the ability to select multiple photos for the same touch up operation. All in all though, it's excellent.
