Just like Ravi, I splurged for the D100 as well. My wife has a coolpix 2500 as well - something simple and small and inexpensive. I'm generally pleased with Nikon stuff. Their lenses tend to be better than typical third party manufacturers, and they cost more. But you get what you pay for.
I have no faults with Canon hardware either, but I've got quite a bit of Nikon gear that I've gathered over the past twelve years, so I bought a camera that was compatible.
I can attach the biggest telephoto lenses on the market to my D100 but I can't afford them :-). I do have 7 lenses for my Nikon, and the one I use the most is the standard 50mm 1.4. (which is 4-6 times brighter than what comes with most point+shoot cameras - great for indoor use without depending on a flash). Of the lenses I have, the Nikon brand ones are the sharpest, fastest focusing, and most rugged. I try to buy a new lens each year, and probably after four or five years, I'll buy something to replace the D100 as my primary camera.
One difference between Nikon and Canon is the software. Nikon has a very nice viewing and printing program - Nikon View 6 included with most of their cameras. Canon's software is horrid in comparison.
There are plenty of third party programs suited to advanced users that can replace and supplement this software.
