We had an '87 Audi 5000CS quattro (the top of the line) some time ago and it was amazing in terms of comfort. The power was also very nice (~165hp turbo 5, I think, which compared to the Volvo 240). However, the electronics crapped out -- let me tell you, when the electronic idle craps out, it's an interesting task to come to a stop going down a hill with three pedals to push and only two feet to push them with. And this was a $40k+ car!
Okay, so that was Audi 16 years ago. HOWEVER, friends of ours have ~2000 A4 wagon. They love it, think it's great fun with the 1.8T, but ... the electronics are completely whacked! They parked the car at the airport while they went on a trip and when the came back, the found all the windows down! How does this happen!? They took the car to the dealer and they couldn't find a problem. It's not human error -- you wouldn't leave the car *at an airport* with ALL FOUR WINDOWS DOWN. You'd notice before locking the doors!
Audi makes good cars, everyone loves them, and no car company is without its faults, so there's no perfect vehicle out there (in my opinion). If you get the A4, just get rid of it within two or three years before you start racking up high mileage and/or it starts feeling the age...
