Where are you going?
If to one of the airport hotels -- you'll pay for parking but there is security. Also the hospitals and universities have ok security.
If you go into downtown Newark -- if its a larger private company you're visiting, then they likely have a garage.
However, most of the garages in Newark are those where they park it for you. In October I had to let one of those garage guys park my pristine 9-5 wagon. When they brought it back -- BIG dent in the bumper. I freaked -- the guys gave me some ridiculous form to fill out. Luckily within a few days in the hot sun it worked itself out pretty much. ABout 2 weeks later I got a later denying "my claim" (without talking to me or looking at the car!)
There is only one park yourself it's near the train station, directly under the train station on Alling St. Better than having someone else park it for you.
High theft area -- in the last few weeks there has been a rash of 9-3 thefts and break-ins in Maplewood (I live in neighboring South Orange). No one ever heard of a Saab being stolen around here -- so it was some news to us Saab owners! I do urge you to be extra careful.
