Thanks all for the info on the pin incompatibility of the processor, etc. You've pretty much convinced me that this machine is fairly worthless, so I may play with it on Linux with full abandon! It currently has an "incurable" virus on its Windows 98 OS, needs to be reloaded anyway, so ................. Not worth upgrading, can buy a new PC complete for less than the sum of the parts I will probably need (motherboard, processor, RAM, different case).
Basically, I just wanted to be able to surf the web with "full immunity". I have done software engineering in the dark ages, figure that with some help I could figure out Linux. Maybe, maybe not. But the price is right and the support is rabid!
