Yes, the aluminum expanded at a diferent rate than copper - hence, there were several issues when the wiring got hot.
A pigtail consists of a copper lead, twisted inside an AL/CU wire nut, along with some electrical flux - to maintain the connections temperature - with the aluminum wiring. This allows the use of copper designated switches/outlets.
You can find AL materails - and generaly there isn't much issue. Except for overloading a circuit. It is much easier with AL vs CU and thi is what causes most problems.
CU wire pricing hasn't changed enough lately to concern you, based on how much you would need.
